The high energy closed-sample sonicator breaks up highly resistant bacterial spores and viral capsids to release DNA or RNA without risk of pathogenic material to the operator because the sample tube is closed.

Many high energy sonicators use a probe that must be placed into the sample to be effective. Thus pathogenic material may be exposed to the air. In this technique, the sample must be sonicated in a containment lab.
